—The Steward, as a demand towards Tulip. |
The Steward is a robot. It was introduced as the main antagonist of the pilot short and returned as the secondary antagonist of the first season of Infinity Train.
Like the name suggests,[1] there used to be multiple Stewards whose original purpose was to tend to passengers.[2] In the fourth season it is revealed that they were destroyed after Amelia took over as conductor. It is unknown how one of them survived.
Appearance[]
The Steward is an enigmatic robotic "creature" composed primarily of a white mask that has multiple tentacle-like cables extending from it, with each ending in a three-clawed "hand". The mask is primarily white and resembles the face of a human with gray lips. Its mechanized nature becomes more apparent when the mask is removed, as behind it is an inner working of gears and a flame producing tube, akin to a flamethrower. It produces neon blue flames that seep out through the eyes of the mask. It has also been seen to produce barrels that shoot out bullets from its eyes. Below the mask is a small slot that can be used by One-One to control the Steward as an exo-suit.
Following its destruction by Atticus in "The Engine," One-One rebuilt the Steward to use in managing the train. The Steward appears more or less functional, although its mask now sports several cracks and it seems to have lost the ability to talk.
Powers and Abilities[]
Due to its morphology, the Steward has extreme versatility in movement and in combat. Its cables allow it to have massive reach and long strides. The cables, though thin, pack a powerful punch, being able to flick Atticus to the side without effort. It can also use it to entangle opponents, as seen when it coiled around Tulip's ankle to prevent her from escaping. Each of the cables are tipped with three blade-like claws at the end. The Steward can also shoot bullets from barrels it can produce from behind its mask that protrudes through the eyes. It appears to follow commands based on a sequence of a four notes (the theme for the series), although it does not appear to matter where the song comes from as One-One and Amelia were able to command the Steward using it. The Steward also has some form of self-destruct sequence where its eyes flash red for several seconds before it being obliterated in a explosion of white light destroying everything in a large radius.

The Steward appears to have been designed to serve as One-One's primary means of getting around the train and managing day-to-day operations easily. Following Amelia Hughes's take over of the train, it was used by her as an assistant, picking up power orbs from the various cars to use in her efforts to create a car of her old life with Alrick Timmens. It was also used to enforce Amelia's philosophy as conductor that the passengers were better off remaining in their own cars.

Trivia[]
- The Steward's design was inspired by the couple's mask from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask and art by Lucian Stanculescu.[3]
- The Steward very strongly resembles 'Satan' from the animated adaptation of The Mysterious Stranger from The Adventures of Mark Twain, an animated segment that Owen has claimed to have inspired Infinity Train.[4]

- ↑ This is awesome! She’s called the Steward, but I like the way you think.
- ↑ "Yes, there were multiple Stewards." - Owen
- ↑ "I’ve seen many people say that I stole the Steward from No Face in Spirited Away. I came up with the Steward at a time that I was looking at a lot of Lucian Stanculescu’s work. At the same time, the lover’s mask from Majora’s Mask has long been an influence on me. Combine these, and you can end up with the Steward." - Owen
- ↑ A former decusion on if there will be a soundtrack for the show. "I wanted the synth based creepy adventure/horror. I referenced Neverending Story a lot, It Follows, Nightmare on Elm Street, the Mysterious Stranger, Blade Runner, Myst, Majora’s Mask, Dune, etc. Just anything that would, hopefully, give kids nightmares. I believe strongly in scaring children." - Owen
